Outdoor Fun Near The Shoreline

Jun 17, 2020

As we slowly begin reopening, we’re excited to enjoy the outdoor spaces that make summer so special. Known for its beaches, Miami is also home to a great number of parks and nature preserves that are perfect for a mini-escape. Safety remains our top priority at the Shoreline, so we’ve gathered a list of five places to enjoy summer hiking and outdoor activities, all while ensuring we stay healthy and mindful of protective guidelines!

Oleta River State Park

Right around the corner from the Shoreline, the Oleta River State Park offers close access to nature while barely needing to leave the city! We’ve mentioned before that the park is a great spot for a day trip where visitors can enjoy hiking on fourteen miles of multi-use trails. All trails are currently open, but the park is limiting visitor capacity for guest safety, so check their website for the latest guidelines.

Everglades National Park

Just a little over an hour from Miami by car, the Everglades National Park is home to a diverse range of habitats and ecosystems unique to Florida. The park is now open to be explored via numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as through a range of guided tours. For a full list of the park’s current activities and safety guidelines, visit their website.

Big Cypress National Preserve

Also near the Everglades is the Big Cypress National Preserve-- a freshwater swamp which plays a crucial role in the marine life of both the Everglades and the surrounding Florida coast. Here you can enjoy hiking paths and scenic drives, though ranger services and access to public facilities are temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus. Check the park’s website for the most up-to-date guidelines.

Bear Cut Preserve

Located in Key Biscayne, the nearby Bear Cut Preserve is home to hiking paths that wind along the shores of Biscayne Bay at Crandon Park. The Preserve’s nature trails will take you along the waterfront, ending on a fossil reef overlook that boasts a dramatic backdrop of downtown Miami. For the latest park guidelines, check here before your trip.

Virginia Key Outdoor Center

The Virginia Key Outdoor Center reopened on June 8th. You can rent paddle boards and kayaks to get out on the water, or bikes to explore the area’s many nature trails. Hiking is also possible along the park’s paths, just watch out for cyclists when you go.

It’s been a challenging last few months, but we’re so grateful to finally get to enjoy a bit of nature’s beauty! We hope you are able to find time for some sunshine as well. Stay safe and let us know where you’re hiking and getting outdoors to by tagging us on social media with #LiveShoreline!
